UGC in a studio or at a creator’s home: how to choose?
The right setting is the one that serves the proof: a real routine, a controlled demonstration, or both.
Two production settings, several uses
A video shot at a creator’s home can show the product in a lived-in setting and bring a personal voice. A studio shoot gives more control over light, sound, sets, framing and the sequence of takes. Neither is automatically more “authentic”: it depends on what you show and how you tell it.
The useful question is: what proof does your audience need to see? An everyday routine sometimes works best in a real home. A texture, a precise gesture or several demonstrations in a single day can benefit from a studio setup.
Decide based on the need
| Main need | Option to consider |
|---|---|
| Personal use or daily routine | A creator in their own setting, if the situation is credible |
| Multiple variations and product shots | Studio, if visual consistency and pace come first |
| Personal testimonial | Someone who has really tested the product, wherever they are |
| Detail shots or demanding sound | A controlled setup, in a studio or an equipped home |
The budget depends on the people, the number of concepts, preparation, editing and rights. Comparing only the price of a shoot day often hides the other costs.
When to combine both
A campaign can combine usage scenes captured by creators with complementary shots filmed in a studio. The message stays consistent, while the images meet different needs: social proof, product detail, format variation or ad adaptation.
To avoid an artificial patchwork, prepare a shared brief: core idea, vocabulary, desired lighting, key gestures and delivery specs. Let each person keep their own way of expressing themselves.
Four questions before the shoot
- Should the viewer believe in a lived experience or understand how something works?
- How many truly different concepts need to be produced?
- Which product constraints call for a specific location or equipment?
- Where will the content be used, and for how long?
These answers guide the casting, the location, the takes and the usage permissions. They stop you choosing a setting just because it looks nicer.
